Tradition, taste and quality

The history of the company, which manufactures the traditional brand, stretches back to 1867 with the entry of Russell KG in Emden’s trade register.

The company belonging to the founder Alfred Russell was initially in business as an import and wholesale agent. From 1949 onwards, Russell’s followers were the first to roast peanuts in Emden. They sold them under the brand name ‘ültje’.

In 1966, they cooperated with the Oetker Group to which they belonged from 1985 to 1997. In the year 2000, ültje was integrated into Europe’s biggest nut group, ‘The Nut Company’, which in turn merged with Intersnack in 2008 to form the ‘Intersnack-Group’.

The ültje hit: 'Just standing here and singing'

In the 140 year history of the company, the healthy snack was not just a hit in Germany – today, the nuts are also available in Austria, Switzerland, Italy and Slovenia. The nut’s TV commercial became well remembered due to its catchy jingle: Who doesn’t know the famous ültjemann with his street vendor’s tray and the song ‘Just standing here and singing…’? The first TV commercial with the cult figure from 1989 made the healthy snack better known. In 1996, even the TV presenter Stefan Raab sang the well known song and adopted a part in the advertising campaign.
